Cat C+E (4 Lessons + Test Day)

Once you hold a category C licence you can then apply to upgrade to a category C+E HGV licence which will allow you to drive artic units with a trailer or a combination of a rigid with a drawbar trailer. Both come under the category of C+E. We provide training in both types of vehicles.

To take a practical driving test in category C+E all you need is an up to date category C licence. (Making sure your medical is valid). You do not need an up to date theory test as this is not necessary.

It is advisable that you book a two hour driving assessment before your course of lessons to determine how much training you will require to reach the DSA test standard. A DSA qualified instructor will assess your driving ability on the road as well as on our private off road training area for reversing. Training is normally conducted 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday but can be conducted on evenings and weekends where necessary. Your training will be 1:1 with your instructor and is normally booked in 4 hour sessions.

The practical test is conducted locally in Beverley and the fee is £115 which we can book and incorporate into your quotation.

The vehicle we use is a Volvo Globetrotter artic unit with a high/low gearbox and a 12 litre 460bhp engine. This is coupled to a 40 ft tri-axle trailer which is the standard size for most haulage companies. This gives you ‘real life’ experience in driving a full size vehicle and is a big advantage when you apply for driving jobs and they ask you ‘what did you pass your test in’. Most employers will not want to take on a new HGV drivers who have passed in a smaller sized vehicle as they are not sure the driver is competent to drive expensive tractor units and trailers of this size.

We also offer the choice of category C+E in a Wagon and Drag. This is a Volvo FM9 rigid vehicle with a high/low gearbox pulling a drawbar trailer. The overall length for this combination is 17.75 metres long. All our vehicles are fully liveried and comply with all current DSA requirements for practical tests.

The difference in the two different types of vehicles can be found in cornering and reversing, which people find easier in the wagon and drag. This type of vehicle is popular on the continent.

Both types of vehicles provide a category C+E licence and once you pass the practical test you can drive either types of vehicle.
